Two Large Christmas Cards Signed. Lot of two large matching Christmas cards from the royal family:

A. Christmas Card From Queen Elizabeth. Large cream-colored card, two pages, folded, 9½ x 8", 1954, with a gilt embossed Crown on the front cover, and a color photograph portrait of the heavily robed Queen and Princess Elizabeth mounted inside, facing the printed greeting which reads, "With Best Wishes For Christmas and The New Year." Queen Elizabeth has penned the date, "1954," and signed, "From Elizabeth R," in bold black ink, underscored by a paraph.

B. Christmas Card From Prince Philip.
Large cream-colored card, two pages, folded, 7 x 9½", 1956, with a gilt embossed imprint of the Crown on the front cover, and a Black & White half-tone image of the Prince with his family mounted within, facing the printed greeting which reads: "With Best Wishes For Christmas And The New Year." Boldly signed, "Philip 1956," in blue ink. Fine. Both cards are slightly soiled from handling.

Signed Color Lithograph of the Enola Gay with Three Signed Photographs. Attractive Color Lithograph of a painting of the Enola Gay in flight high above a broken peninsula off Japan. Approximately 29 x 23", n.d., with a printed legend at bottom which reads:

" Atomic Warfare is Born
Precisely at 17 seconds past 8:15 a.m. on 6 August, 1945, Colonel Paul W.Tibbets and the crew of the ENOLA GAY,
a B-29-45-MO, released the first atomic weapon, nicknamed "Little Boy." Forty-three seconds later, Hiroshima ceased
to exist as a city, and the course of warfare changed forever. "


Rendered in pale blues, greys, light greens, ocher, and earthy clay tones, the lithograph is signed in full by three of the crew members of the first atomic mission: pilot Paul W. Tibbets, bombardier Thomas W. Ferebee and navigator Theodore J. Van Kirk.

Accompanied by Three Signed Photographs of crew members of the Enola Gay, each a Black & White, 8 x 10" image, including a composed headshot of pilot Paul W. Tibbets; an old-fashioned seated portrait of youthful tail gunner George R. Caron; and a smiling headshot of the boyish navigator Theodore J. Van Kirk. Each is dressed in military uniform. All have signed in full in dark blue ink.

[Enola Gay] "Escape Maneuver For Atomic Mission".
Multicopy of a Drawing Which Outlines Plans for an Escape Maneuver for the Enola Gay Signed by Paul Tibbets. Accompanied by Two Signed Photographs. Multicopy Manuscript Document Signed, One page, Quarto, dated August 1, 1945. Entitled, "Escape Maneuver For Atomic Mission," this fascinating document presents drawn plans for an escape maneuver for the Enola Gay in the event of a last minute need to abort the mission. The drawing depicts the "Primary Target Hiroshima Japan" as a black bullseye, with circles radiating around the target representing "Bomb Flash," the first anticipated "Shock Wave," the second "Shock Wave," and the flight path of a secondary plane. The expected times of the detonation and shock wave events are given, along with flight paths and data for the planes and atomic explosion. The drawing is made to the Scale ¼ " = ¼ mile. The plan was made by R. A. Lewis, Major, US Air Force, and is boldly signed in blue ink by pilot of the Enola Gay Paul Tibbets, who has inscribed, "Paul W. Tibbets 11-5-90."

Accompanied by Two Signed Photographs, the first an attractive 8 x 10" Color reproduction of a painting of the Enola Gay entitled, "Atomic Warfare is Born." The photograph is signed by all the principal crew members, including Paul Tibbets (Pilot), Thomas W. Ferebee (Bombardier) Theodore J. Van Kirk (Navigator), Richard H. Nelson (Radio Operator), George R. Caron (Tail gunner), and Jacob Beser (Radar Countermeasure Officer). Each has signed in full in blue felt-tip pen. Also included is a Black & White, 8 x 10" Signed Photograph of tail gunner George Caron, inscribed "George R. Caron Tail Gunner - Enola Gay." . Fine.

[Enola Gay] Ferebee, Tom. (1918-2000) Bombardier on the Enola Gay.

Inscribed Photograph Signed. Color, 8 x 10", n.d., n.p. Inscribed in full:

"We were victorious! We were Gallant! and we got the job done! I dropped the bomb at precisely 08:15 E Pacific Time. The bomb detonated one minute later at 08:16 Hrs. Japan surrendered 9 days later saving nearly 250,000 of our service men. Tom Ferebee -- Bombardier. 6 Aug. 1945".

Fine. Also enclosed is a facsimile ALS in which he vehemently refuses a paid request for his story. This and another enclosed facsimile state that he will only sign photos with his name, title and date of dropping the bomb. "I made a mistake adding things and will not do it again." This inscribed photo is an extremely rare piece. The bombing of Hiroshima was voted the most historic event of the 20th century by TIME magazine.

[Enola Gay] "Navigator's Log of the Enola Gay".
Framed Poster Signed by Tibbets, Ferebee, and Van Kirk. Accompanied By Two Signed Photographs. Striking Color Poster-sized reproduction of the Navigator's Log of the Enola Gay, approximately 20 x 26". The poster reproduces in blow-up the original Navigators Log kept by Theodore Van Kirk, navigator of the historic atomic mission. A text box inset at the bottom of the poster informs us:

"On August 6, 1945 the B-29 bomber "Enola Gay" dropped the world's first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. This is a reproduction of the Navigator's Log of that historic flight. It is exactly as prepared during the flight; there have been no additions, corrections, or alterations of any kind. All times noted in the log are local Tinian time (one hour ahead of Hiroshima time), and all speed and distance figures are in nautical miles (knots). The accompanying map [here the text refers to an adjacent inset] outlines the flight path of the Enola Gay..."

The Log records the flight data - position, times, course, altitude, conditions, airspeed, and other vitals - used by the navigator to keep the airplane on course and on time, "and also, to allow the navigator to determine aircraft location in a short time in the event of problems with the plane or bomb." The poster is signed at the bottom by the Pilot, the Bombardier, and the Navigator of the Enola Gay, "Paul W. Tibbets Thomas Ferebee Theodore J Van Kirk."

Also included are Two Black & White, 8 x 10" Signed Photographs , the first an image of Paul Tibbets waving from the cockpit of the Enola Gay, signed in full "Paul W. Tibbets"; the second photograph is a Black & White, 8 x 10" headshot of bombardier Thomas W. Ferebee in Air Force togs, signed in full "Thomas W. Ferebee Bombardier."

Signed Statement On The Morality of Dropping the Bomb by Paul Tibbets with Two Signed Photographs. Printed Statement on the morality of dropping the first atomic bomb, One page, Quarto, on yellow poster stock, n.d. Entitled, "General Paul Tibbets [sic] Reflections On Hiroshima," the document reads, in full:

"...the morality of dropping the bomb was not my business. I was instructed to perform a military mission...and that was the thing I was going to do to the best of my ability. Paul W. Tibbets Brig. Gen., USAF (Ret.)"

Also included are Three Signed Photographs: a Black & White, 8 x 10" headshot of Enola Gay pilot Paul W.Tibbets decorated as a General, signed "Paul W. Tibbets"; an eerie Black & White, 8 x 10" image of the Enola Gay coming in for a twilight landing, also signed in full by pilot Tibbets; and a framed 5 x 7", Black & White photograph of nuclear physicist Edward Teller, a chief scientist at Los Alamos and an early advocate of atomic weapon development, seated on a desk in his laboratory.

Fairbanks, Douglas Sr. (1883-1939) Silent film star and swashbuckling matinee idol of such films as Robin Hood (1922) and The Thief of Bagdad (1924), in which he did all his own stunts. He was a founder of United Pictures and in 1920 he married the popular actress Mary Pickford.

Signed Photograph. A Glossy, 8 x 10" film still of the silent screens greatest swashbuckler, depicting the fallen hero on the brink of death, stretched out in a makeshift sick bed inside a tent, surrounding by solicitous friends, whose fate now hangs grimly in the balance. Fairbanks has signed in deep blue ink, "Douglas Fairbanks." Fine.

Autograph Letter Signed. One page, Octavo, on gilt embossed personal letterhead, [Palm Springs, California] May 9, 1978. To Tennis great Pancho Gonzalez, winner of four Grand Slam Titles, thanking the tennis star for a lesson he has just received. Ford writes:

"Dear Pancho: Just a note to thank you for your wonderful assistance in preparation for my tennis match in Houston. Good news. John Newcombe & I defeated Dick Stockton & Jim Baker 6 - 1. I played well enough to help a little. A few disasters at the net but the serve & volleying went well. Again, I'm most grateful. You were most helpful. If you come to Palm Springs please give me a call. Sincerely, Jerry Ford."

Fine. Play tennis? Ford letters simply don't get better than this.

Your kind comments about Betty's influence was, of course, deeply appreciated. The arrangements for the national convention are being made by the National Committee. I can only suggest, therefore, that anyone who is interested in obtaining tickets get in touch with the National Committeeman or National Committeewoman from his state...Sincerely, Gerry."

[Foster, J.J.]. Concerning The True Portraiture of Mary Queen Of Scots. London, 1904. First Edition Signed. Limited "Edition Royale," number twelve of a printing of forty-five copies. Large Folio, original dark morocco, with gilt borders and a giant embossed coat of arms on front cover. 126 pages. Profusely illustrated with exceedingly fine reproductions, made from the original paintings, with a comprehensive list of each studied work, the artist, and the provenance of the painting. A study of all the known portraiture of Mary Queen of Scots. Covers separated, with front restored with tape. Moderate rubbing to extremities. Though this volume is only in Very Good condition, the text and reproductions themselves are impressive and fine.

Foujita, Leonard-Tsuguharu. (1886-1968) Artist, born in Japan, settled in Paris in 1913 where he lived a bohemian lifestyle.

Autograph Letter Signed. One page, Octavo, [Paris], May 31, 1945. To Miss Ida Kar, in London. Interesting letter, written in broken English, concerning the artist's collection of toy dolls ("dolles"). Foujita writes, in part:

"...My dolles [sic] I like so much like my own boy or girl, I find the dolles at the shop of Mrs. Andre l'Hote, well-known artist have many such a nice collection. dolles are of 1830 Napoleon III epoque. I haven't the boy or girl then. The dolls are my childrens...My picture is only study of nude, not so important. I study every day with models. That's all. -- Foujita."

Fine. A few words have been underscored in red pencil; otherwise the letter is in fine condition. With the original envelope addressed in Foujita's hand.

Lot 725
[French and Indian Wars].
Manuscript Letter Fragment. Two full pages, recto/verso, trimmed Quarto, n.p., [176 ?]. Utterly absorbing manuscript letter describing a number of Indian raids and encounters, written in the form of an anecdotal remembrance by a frontier backwoodsman, who narrates the incidents in a halting, illiterate, careful and journalistic account. Each of the recollections relates to encounters with hostile Indians, either experienced by the narrator or reported to him by frontiersmen he has come into contact with. It seems likely that this narrative letter was written in response to a request for information about Indian activity in the region. Excerpts follow, with solecisms intact:

"My father was Borne 1739 when he was fifteen years ould in his sixteen year he and a number [ ? ] was up from North yearmouth to cutting the grate meadow...the Ingens came and robed the camp took a gun and all the aminishon except what he had with him took all his provision and several tools thair was no house in this town nor any land cleared this was in the year 1749 in what year thay begun the Blockhous I never heard him say but he says it was completed the year he was twenty one which was 1755...I have heard him speak of a number of things that took place while thay was building the Blockhous a coupel of thair hands wanted to go down to the old Bucks place to soe some turnop seed by the name of Cross and Beverage thay promised to comback that night but thay did not come and thay started Earley in the morning and when thay got thair Beverage ly [lay] Dead at the Door and Cross thay never heard of afterwards At another time thair was a coupel of hunters by the name of Tairwill and Taylor tha [they] had ben out and returning home by the litel [little] pond this side of Mr. Crockets thay see we air thair was some Beavers and thay got thair traps and come in with thair fir [fur] and caried it to North yarmouth and when tha came back tha [they] went out to thair traps and the Ingins had found and waylid thair traps and took tham And caried tham to quebeck after peace [1764] tha both returned taylor said when the Ingens took them thair was fifteen of tham and tha was going to tak[e] tham that was buld [building] the garson [garrison]..." .

Fine. Though the letter has been trimmed, and is incomplete, the text is an integral narrative, which may or may not have been completed by additional pages. Light age-toning, with some very moderate staining.
