of a painting of the Enola Gay in flight high above a broken peninsula
off Japan. Approximately 29 x 23", n.d., with a printed legend at bottom which
reads:
" Atomic Warfare is Born
Precisely at 17 seconds past
8:15 a.m. on 6 August, 1945, Colonel Paul W.Tibbets and the crew of the ENOLA
GAY,
a B-29-45-MO, released the first atomic weapon, nicknamed "Little Boy."
Forty-three seconds later, Hiroshima ceased
to exist as a city, and the
course of warfare changed forever. "
Rendered in pale blues, greys,
light greens, ocher, and earthy clay tones, the lithograph is signed in full by
three of the crew members of the first atomic mission: pilot Paul W.
Tibbets, bombardier Thomas W. Ferebee and navigator Theodore J.
Van Kirk.
Accompanied by Three Signed Photographs of crew
members of the Enola Gay, each a Black & White, 8 x 10" image, including
a composed headshot of pilot Paul W. Tibbets; an old-fashioned seated portrait
of youthful tail gunner George R. Caron; and a smiling headshot of the boyish
navigator Theodore J. Van Kirk. Each is dressed in military uniform. All have
signed in full in dark blue ink.
