First Day Covers Signed by Military Leaders. A looseleaf album containing an assortment of twenty-eight first day covers, each 3½ x 6½", with cancellation dates ranging from 1944-1966, and elaborate cachets commemorating the US Armed Forces, our most famous Generals, and the great battles of World War II, all signed by Generals and Admirals of the US Navy and Marine Corps. The collection includes a cover honoring Patton, with a matching commemorative stamp, signed by C.W. Nimitz,; a first day of issue postcard celebrating "Airmail," signed by Air Force General James H. Doolittle; a navy commemorative signed by Admiral William F. Halsey; a cover remembering "Okinawa" signed by Commander Raymond A. Spruance, the gunnery expert who led Task Force 16 at the decisive Battle of Midway (1942); an "Occupied Nations" cover commemorating Bataan and the Philippines, signed by General Jonathan Wainwright, who commanded the epic retreat in the Bataan peninsula after MacArthur's departure; elaborately cacheted covers signed by Admirals Ernest King, Arthur Radford, and Arleigh Burke; Generals David Shoup, James Van Fleet, Lucius Clay, J. H. Collier, Lewis Walt, L.F. Chapman, Jr., General A. A. Vandegriff, the Marine commander at Iwo Jima, on a first day cover commemorating this historic battle; a colorfully decorative cover honoring "Liberation," signed by Vice-Admiral Marc A. Mitscher, and accompanied by a typed letter signed by the naval commander; a handsome commemoration of the Armed Forces Reserve signed by the commander of the US forces at Normandy, Omar Bradley; and multiply-signed covers featuring Doolittle, Spruance, McNarney, and eight others; another signed by C.W. Nimitz and General Curtis LeMay; a "Victory Day" cover boldly signed by General Mark W. Clark; a colorful celebration of the Navy, signed by Frank Knox, Secretary of the Navy; and several other examples signed by the military leaders of WWII.
