Inspirational 1811 Half Dollar

Lot 1633 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1811. NGC graded MS-65. Golden toned at the centers, surrounded at the borders by steel-blue colors. Completely original, with deep, creamy luster and unbroken color on the high points. NGC reports 11 at this level, 7 in MS-66, and 3 in MS-67. A fabulous piece for the collector who loves nice toning. Color photo.
Estimated Value $7,500-8,500.

Lot 1634 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1811. O-107, R-4. Small 8. NGC graded MS-63. Lots of frosty luster rests beneath a layer of mottled charcoal-silver toning. Struck from dies that were slightly out-of-parallel, resulting in weakness on Liberty's cap and the base of the reverse. Completely original and, in our opinion, conservatively graded. According to the consignor, this is the second finest example known of the variety.
Estimated Value $1,500-2,000.

Magnificently Toned 1814 Half Dollar

Lot 1635 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1814. O-105, R-4. NGC graded MS-66. A magnificent, virtually unimprovable example of this date. Struck from heavily clashed dies (this eventually led to a refinishing of the dies and the O-105a variety). Beautiful, silver gray and rose toning in that wonderful format where the underlying luster seems to stretch from the tops of the lettering and devices. Very nicely struck and super clean. NGC has graded 4 1814 Half Dollars (of several different varieties) at this level, with only 3 finer.
Estimated Value $8,200-9,000.

Gem 1817 Capped Bust Half Dollar

Lot 1636 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1817. NGC graded MS-65. Bold cartwheels dance around both sides when this frosty Gem is rotated under a light source. The immaculate surfaces are toned in a pale, silver-lilac color, with hints of steely iridescence at the peripheries. Great strike, great eye appeal, great everything. NGC reports 3 in this grade, and only 1 finer.
Estimated Value $8,500-9,500.

Lot 1637 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1819, 9 over 8. Large 9. O-103, R-3. MS-64. Soft even luster, subdued somewhat by a layer of silver-gray toning, enhanced by some burnt-gold and golden-lilac peripheral toning. Minor color changes on the high points of the obverse; the reverse is immaculate and the color is completely even.
Estimated Value $1,800-2,000.

Spectacular 1822/1 Half Dollar

Lot 1638 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1822, 2 over 1. NGC graded MS-66. A phenomenal coin in all areas -- strike, surface quality, luster, and eye appeal. Let's start with the first aspect -- strike. Every fine detail in Liberty's hair is crisply defined, as are all of the eagle's feathers and the lines in the shields. The only weak spot on this coin is the first through the third stars, and even they are not bad. Surface quality is impressive -- the wide open fields are unbroken by marks and Liberty's vulnerable cheek is unharmed. The luster?...nice, soft and even...stretching from rim to rim. Finally, the best part of this coin, the eye appeal, brought to new heights by a silky blend of silver-gold pastels surrounded by sea-green and steel-blue iridescence. Whether you're a date, type, or variety collector, this coin is sure to please. Tied with one other coin for the lofty title of finest NGC graded 1822/1 Half Dollar. Color photo.
Estimated Value $16,000-19,000.

Lot 1639 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1826. O-108a. ICG graded MS-62. Semi-prooflike, with bright surfaces and a crisp strike (weak only on some of the stars). A crescent of iridescent, red-gold toning appears at the top of the obverse.
Estimated Value $600-700.

Lot 1640 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1827. Square base 2. MS-63. Lustrous, silver-gray surfaces, especially so on the reverse. Great for type purposes.
Estimated Value $1,600-1,800.

Lot 1641 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1828. O-115. Square base 2, small 8's, large letters. NGC graded MS-64. PQ. Beautiful toning consisting of rose, olive, and blue pastels. The reverse is fully Prooflike -- even the stripes of the shield are polished and brilliant. The obverse is not nearly as brilliant and has more of a satiny appearance. We suspect that at least one time in this coin's past, it was referred to as a "one-sided" Proof. Breen doesn't mention this variety specifically, but makes note that at least 6-8 of the Square Base 2, Small 8's, Large Letters Half Dollars are known as Proofs. He also lists a one-sided Proof of the Overton 105 variety. So, this coin is not without precedent. Whether it is worth a premium or not, we leave to you, the bidder. Color photo.
Estimated Value $2,500-2,750.

1832. O-103, R-1. MS-60 +. Bathed in luster and very bright. The color is mostly white, with just a tinge of color appearing on the high points of the obverse. Nicely struck and worthy of your examination and bids.
Estimated Value $900-1,000.

Lot 1645 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1833. O-110, R-1. PCGS graded MS-64. Splendid, multi-colored toning over creamy, heavily frosted surfaces. Softly struck on some of the stars, typical of the variety. Perfect for type purposes or for the advanced variety collector.
Estimated Value $1,700-2,000.

Lot 1646 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1836. Reeded edge. NGC graded MS-63. A trifle softly struck as is usual for this scarce low mintage date. The surfaces exhibit subdue mint luster overlaid with natural violet deepening at the borders to iridescent blue. A mere 1200 were struck and only a handful of mint state examples are extant.
Estimated Value $12,000-14,000.
