1846, 6 over horizontal 6. NGC graded MS-62. A well struck specimen exhibiting full star definition as well as complete hair detail on Liberty. Some light contact marks are scattered about the unprotected surfaces and some light toning exists about the peripheries on both sides. A rare coin that is nearly impossible to locate in mint state grades. NGC reports a total of just 8 examples in Mint State and some of those may be duplications. Expect plenty of competition from half dollar specialists on this one.
Estimated Value $5,700-6,300.

Magnificent Gem 1888 Half Dollar

Lot 1653 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1888. NGC graded MS-67 *. A marvelous example with superb eye appeal as the star designation notes on the holder. A mostly well struck specimen, a trifle soft on the upper stars around Liberty's head, with pristine frosty mint surfaces throughout. A splash of natural iridescent sunset toning covers the lower portion of the obverse while the reverse exhibits light mottled toning with turquoise about the borders. This gem is certainly a candidate for Finest Known. Population of only 1 .
Estimated Value $9,500-10,500.

Lot 1654 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1891. NGC graded Proof 64 Cameo. Last year of the Seated Liberty design. This lovely Proof has the "orange-peel" surfaces normally associated with Proof Gold coins of the period. A wide band of attractive, speckled toning runs diagonally across the obverse; the reverse is pretty much color-free. A nice example from an original mintage of a mere 600 Proofs.
Estimated Value $1,000-1,200.
