1805. O-106, R-4. EF-40. Antique grey and olive toning on both sides. Decent strike, the only weakness appearing at the tip of the bust and on the opposite side of the coin in the clouds. A perfect representation of the date and grade.
Estimated Value $600-700.

1805, 5 over 4. O-101, R-4. AU-55. Beautiful silver-gray, lilac, and steel-blue toning over lustrous surfaces. Small amounts of dirt surround some of the stars and outer legends, begging the question "Should this coin be conserved?" It's really a lovely piece as it sits, but one wonders if there might be some underlying luster ready to be revealed. We'll leave it to the next owner to answer that question.
Estimated Value $3,100-3,300.

1806, 6 over 5. O-104. VF-30. Early die state, no cracks. Attractive antique cabinet toning.
Estimated Value $500-600.

Beautifully Toned Draped Bust Half

Lot 1632 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1806. Pointed 6, stem not through claw. O-109a, R-5. NGC graded MS-64. This remarkable coin has some of the prettiest toning you'll ever see on a Draped Bust Half Dollar, or any early American type, for that matter. Plus, the toning is equally impressive on both sides, not just one. Boldly struck from worn dies, such that the centers are sharp but the details weaken at the peripheries, with some of the stars and letters deforming and stretching into the denticles. This late state also shows the die crack at star 12, labeled R-5 (Rare) by Overton. This may, in fact, be the finest example known of the sub-variety -- if not, we're sure it's the loveliest! For the entire date, NGC has graded only 18 at this level, 3 in MS-65, and only 1 in MS-66. Color photo.
Estimated Value $22,000-25,000.
