Finest PCGS Graded Proof 1854 Seated Dollar

Lot 623 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1854. PCGS graded Proof 65. An impressive example of this scarce date Dollar, one of an estimated 50 Proofs struck for the year. At the Proof-65 level, this piece stands alone as the single finest example graded by PCGS, making it one of the top three examples known of the date (this coin, an NGC Proof-65, and Phil Kaufman's NGC Proof-66). This one has been atop the PCGS chart for several years, as evidenced by the older style, green label. This makes it a good candidate for a Cameo designation, as both sides appear to have enough frosting to "make the grade." Toned in golden-brown iridescence on the obverse. The reverse is pure white and dazzling. A great coin for advanced collector of this challenging series. Color photo.
Estimated Value $30,000-35,000.

Nicely Toned 1855 Proof Liberty Seated Dollar

Lot 624 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1855. PCGS graded Proof 64. One of an estimated 50 Proofs struck of this date. Nicely toned in lilac-gray, with scattered flecks of burnt-gold color and highlights of golden iridiescence for added attraction. Housed in an old style, green label PCGS holder. PCGS reports 7 in this grade with 2 higher. Mintages for Proof coins prior to 1858 are very low because the general public had no idea that such coins were even available -- only a small coterie of well-connected dealers and collectors were aware that they could apply to the Mint and, for a small premium over the face value of the coins, obtain Proof versions. Eventually, the Mint caught on and realized that they had a real potential for profits in their Proof Coin Department, a potential realized when they "went public" in 1858. Color photo.
Estimated Value $17,000-20,000.

Outstanding Cameo Proof 1857 Seated Dollar

Lot 625 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1857. NGC graded Proof 64 Cameo. A stunning choice brilliant proof specimen. Probably among those struck in January when the dies were fresh, as this example is boldly defined throughout. The mirror fields are watery with the raised portions frosty giving this beauty its Cameo designation. The few faint hairlines and imperfections present where probably there during striking; the delicate light golden toning further adds to its appeal. Population of only 1 with 3 higher, all Proof 66 Cameo.
Estimated Value $15,000-17,000.

Exquisite Gem Proof 1866 Seated Dollar

Lot 626 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1861. PCGS graded Proof 66. Perfectly toned in a wondrous blend of blue and lilac colors, with some mottling near the centers that remind us of a clear, star-filled summer night. This is the only Proof-66 graded by PCGS. They've graded one finer at the PR-67 level, but it would take a lot of convincing to make us believe that any coin could be as visually attractive as this piece. Housed in an old style, green label PCGS holder, offering the tantalizing possibility of an upgrade. A definite treat for the connoisseur of toned coins. Front cover coin. Color photo.
Estimated Value $15,000-20,000.

Gorgeous Gem Proof 1863 Seated Dollar

Lot 627 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1863. NGC graded Proof 65. A boldly struck gem with full hair detail on Liberty. This splendid example exhibits beautiful antique lilac and electric blue toning on both sides. Certainly among the most beautiful survivors from a mintage of only 460 proofs made. This prize should be viewed in person or at a minimum see our color plates. Color photo.
Estimated Value $14,000-16,000.

Lot 628 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1864. NGC graded Proof 64. A glittering example of this rare, Civil War dated Proof Dollar, here with speckled honey-gold and steel-blue iridescence scattered about. Light cameos, possibly worth a resubmission. One of only 470 Proof struck in 1864 and near the top of the condition ladder. NGC reports only 37 in this grade and only 20 finer.
Estimated Value $4,500-5,000.

Lot 629 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1870-CC. MS-60. Obverse 2, Reverse 5. A trifle soft on the head and the upper right stars. The fields are nice and reflective and exhibit light hairlines, probably the result of an old cleaning; now starting to tone. We note a couple of scratches near star one. The first Carson City silver dollar and seldom offered in such high grade.
Estimated Value $3,500-4,000.

Lot 630 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1871. MS-60 +. A first strike example shimmering with proof-like surfaces. Totally brilliant, the fields exhibit light handling marks, none of which are too serious. Overall, a very pleasing business strike that would fit nicely into a high grade type set.
Estimated Value $900-1,000.
