1875. NGC graded Proof 64. Lovely vivid rainbow toning graces a quadrant of the obverse while the reverse is completely toned. We note a tiny white spot in the left obverse field, a result of some small piece of debris being present during striking. Only 700 proofs struck. Population reports 49 in this grade with 17 higher. Color photo.
Estimated Value $3,250-3,750.

1875. Proof 64 Cameo. A cloud of light film rests across the obverse surfaces. We note some faint marks in the unprotected fields, most of which were present during striking. A choice proof example of which only 700 were struck.
Estimated Value $1,900-2,100.

Tied for Finest Known at NGC

1880. NGC graded Proof 68 Cameo. A Proof-only date, here in a glittering, snow white version. Moderate cameos, bright, reflective fields. Immaculate surfaces approaching perfection. None have been graded finer by NGC and this piece is tied with 4 others at this level. One for the perfectionist.
Estimated Value $30,000-35,000.

1880. SEGS graded Proof 63. A glittering, totally white brilliant proof specimen with far fewer hairlines than one might expect for this numerical grade. Definately, a choice example of this proof-only year.
Estimated Value $1,600-1,700.

Ultra Cameo 1881 Trade Dollar

Lot 635 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1881. NGC graded Proof 66 Ultra Cameo. A dazzling example of this rare, Proof-only date, here in a nearly pure white version. Impeccable surfaces and wonderful eye appeal. NGC reports only 1 example in this grade and only 1 finer. Thus, the chances of upgrading this piece are extremely low and the cost would be extremely high in relation. "Ultra" refers to the extreme contrast between the devices and the fields, but it really means "ultimate" in terms of rarity and desirability. Ultra Cameos were the first coins struck from fresh dies. As more and more coins were struck, the frosting wore off by the polishing effect of the metal of the planchets squeezing against the metal of the dies. If enough coins were struck, the dies would eventually become completely brilliant, or nearly so. Thus, Ultra Cameo Proofs, by their very nature, are extremely rare.
Estimated Value $15,000-17,500.

Blast White 1882 Trade Dollar

Lot 636 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1882. PCGS graded Proof 65 Deep Cameo. A rare, Proof-only date with an entire mintage consisting of a mere 1,097 coins. This is one of the finest survivors -- PCGS reports 3 in this grade and only 1 finer. This example is pure white, without a trace of color on either side, allowing the full effect of the cameo contrast to be viewed and enjoyed. The surfaces are completely mark-free. Powerful eye appeal for the power collector. No circulation strikes were made of the 1879-1883 Trade Dollars because the Trade Dollar was supplanted by the Morgan Dollar beginning in 1878. Nevertheless, Proofs of those years were included in annual Proof Sets, or offered for sale individually. The 1884 may have been a legitimate Proof date (die books of the period indicate that dies were made for 1884 Trade Dollars); the 1885 is believed to be a clandestine (but highly desired) issue.
Estimated Value $10,000-11,000.
