Audubon, John J
(1785-1851). Famed artist known for scientifically accurate portrayals
of American birds. With almost no training in art or science, Audubon
depicted hundreds of birds, accurately sized with realistic colorings, in
their appropriate surrounding flora.
Autograph Note Signed
("J.J. Audubon"). On a single sheet, 7½ x 3", n.p., January
5, 1837. In black ink. To his "dearest friends". With four vertical
folds, an adhesive on four corners of verso, two small spots of toning at
lower edge, and rough upper edge. In very good condition overall.
In
the midst of the four printings of Birds of America, Audubon pens
this fragmented note: "Please attend to the above. The materials cost
here 32 Dollars and fifty-cents Cartage. Ed Harris is not yet come. I have
your 2 letters of the 19th and 29th of Nov! Will write June. The Superb is
in the roads and I hope it will sail tomorrow morning. God bless you both.
Yours faithfully."

Buffet, Bernard
(1928-1999) A French painter whose figurative paintings and prints used
exceptional strength of line and an unmistakable style to express a sense
of painful anxiety associated Existentialism and the troubled mood of
post-war French society. One of the foremost artists of the 20th Century,
his artistic philosophy was, " Abstract Painting is limited and boring,
while figurative is unlimited."
Signatures ("Bernard
Buffet"). Five signed Buffet reproductions: "Le Pont-des-Arts," "La
Tour Eiffel," "Fruit Dish," New York City II" and "Bread and Wine." All of
the prints have been matted and sizes range from 13 x 9½" to

Cadmus, Paul
(1904-1999) American artist whose work fused Renaissance forms and
technique with contemporary satire. Cadmus' works blended magical
landscapes, urban grit, suburban banality and an idealization of the male
body into a colorful and complex portrayal of American vice and virtue.
Signatures ("Paul Cadmus"). Lot of 26 signed reproductions.
This lot includes eight matted items ranging from 9¾ x 9" to
11½ x 13¾" including: "What I Believe" matted with "Manikins"
on the verso; "Seeing the New Year In"; "Ricordi Estruschi"; an untitled
piece; "Playground"; "Self Portrait" which is matted with a signed and
inscribed exhibition catalog page, "With good wishes to the
Sullivans"; and, a portrait inscribed "To Arn with gratitude for his
enthusiasm about my work." Also included are 18 signed reproductions
from a book, all of which are suitable for framing and a signed First Day
Cover featuring Henry O. Tanner. Except for some very minor edge wear on a

This lot includes eight matted pieces (sizes range from 9½ x 8" to
13¾ x 11") including two drawings of nudes, his 1948 "Self Portrait,"
"Polo Spill, " "Point o View," "Going South," "Two Boys on a Beach," "Two
Boys on a Beach no. 2" and 15 unmatted signed reproductions taken from a
book about Cadmus - all of which are suitable for matting. There is very
minor edge wear on a few of the unmatted pieces, but otherwise all of the

George Tooker and Jared French. Signatures. In this lot of five, we are
proud to offer signatures from three early figures in the magic realism
movement -- a uniquely American style of visual arts. Paul Cadmus
and George Tooker have signed a 6 x 8" brochure for a 1990 exhibit
featuring early works of Cadmus, Tooker and Jared French. The brochure
features a 1948 black and white photo of the three artists at work.Tooker's
signature also appears on a color reproduction of "Carnival." Jared
French's scarce signature comes from the back of an envelope sent to
Paul Cadmus, as is noted in a personal note from Cadmus, and is mounted
with a reproduction of his painting "The Double." Paul Cadmus' signature
also appears on two small matted reproductions: "Me: 1940-1990" and a nude.
All of the items are in fine condition.

Christy, Howard
Chandler (1872-1952). American illustrator and portraitist. Displaying
artistic talent at an early age, Chandler studied under William Merritt
Chase and began working illustrating periodicals. During World War I
Christy's posters promoting government war bonds, the Red Cross, and
volunteers popularized the "Christy Girl" -- a beautiful and emancipated
woman. Christy's sitters included Presidents, society women, celebrities,
and military leaders.
Autograph Letter Signed ("Howard Chandler
Christy"). Three pages, 5 x 7¾", Duncan Falls, Ohio, January 26,
1914. On "The Barracks" stationery. To Paul Eldridge. Accompanied by the
original transmittal envelope. Some age toning and minor soiling, mailing
folds, and adhesive residue on verso of envelope. Overall, condition is
very good.
A very nice letter from one of America's foremost
illustrators, presumably answering questions from a fan:"...I am
certainly very glad you liked the illustration for the Valley of the Moon.
I am sending a little note and sketch to Miss Gladys whose sketches are
very interesting...The cosmopolitan [Cosmopolitan Magazine] engages
me to illustrate the storie [sic]. The writer probably does not know
who is to illustrate the story...my work keeps me so busy that it is
difficult to get away even for a day. Enjoy life here in the country where
there is out of door exercise. You would like this place which I named 'The
Barracks' on account of my fondness for the Army having gone through the
Santiago Campaign in Cuba -- and this home and studio filled with relics.
It is said to be the most beautiful view in the state of Ohio."

(1826-1900) American Romantic landscape painter who was one of the
foremost members of the Hudson River school.
Signatures
("Frederic E. Church" /"Frederic Edwin Church"). Three
signatures on slips of paper matted with color reproductions of the
artist's work. All are dated ("April 4, 1862", "May 4, 1871", "July 31
1897"). One signature has a faint vertical crease, there are tape
stains above another signature but overall condition is very good.

Cocteau, Jean
(1889-1963). French novelist, poet, librettist, actor, film director
and painter. A true visual artist, Cocteau's works show the distinct
influence of surrealism, Catholicism and opium use.
Autograph
Letter Signed ("Jee Cocteau"). In French. One page, octavo, St.-Jean
Cap Ferrat (postmark), October 9, 1954. To Louis Bonalumi. Accompanied by
the original transmittal envelope. One horizontal mailing fold. In fine to
very fine condition.
Writing from the villa of Madame Weisweiller,
Cocteau discusses the preparation of his complete works for publication,
provided however, that it be produced on his own terms. In full: "Very
dear Bonelumi, I have no news from Orengo. The flying saucers are causing a
lot of trouble. If Plon (refuses?) our complete works, we'll publish
them elsewhere. (From Plon I haven't the slightest news, either.) I embrace
you, Jee Cocteau".

imagery.

quarto, n.p., [1965]. Being a printed Loan Agreement from the Gallery of
Modern Art, completed in typescript. Dali's full signature in blue ink.
Also signed by Gala Dali. Staple holes at upper left corner. In fine
condition.
This agreement for the loan of the painting "Enfant
Bulgares Mangeant des Rats," between the Gallery of Modern Art and Mr. and
Mrs. Salvador Dali includes size, value and condition report of the
painting. The painting was borrowed for the exhibition "Salvador Dali
1918-1965." Dali's full signature is rare.

Modern Art and Mr. and Mrs. Salvador Dali centers on the piece "The
Ascension of St. Cecilia", and mentions its size, value and condition,
which was borrowed for the exhibition "Salvador Dali 1918-1965." Dali's

Grandma Moses
(1860-1961) Byname of Anna Mary Robertson Moses. Although she did not
begin painting until her 70s, Grandma Moses was the most acclaimed American
Primitive artist of the 20th century. Largely self-taught, Moses created
almost 2,000 paintings remarkable for their for purity of color, harmonious
composition and energetic portrayals of American life.

Clipped signature matted with a color reproduction of "The Sleigh Ride" to
an overall size of 9¾ x 11." Fine condition.
A very nice
piece, the signature is strong and clear and very nicely matted.

Gross, Chaim
(1904-1991). Austrian-American sculptor whose fanciful works, in a
variety of media, show rhythmic movement and balance.
Original
Drawing Signed ("Chaim Gross"). 3 x 5", 1941, n.p. Pen and ink
wash. Being a card, printed "Autograph of / Property of R. Van Haecke -
Editor-Top Topics News Service." Very minor smudging, small amount of
adhesive residue on verso, overall condition is fine.
This charming
drawing and Gross' bold signature make for a unique collector's piece. The
symbol below "Chaim" is the artist's monogram "CH G," featuring an
inverted "G". Gross referred to the symbol as "the Dog" and it appears on
all finished drawings and sculptures.

Hirschfeld, Al (b.
1903). Legendary American caricaturist known for his sketches of Hollywood
notables as seen in the New York Times. At the age of 17, Hirschfeld
began working as the art director of Selznick Studios. He traveled to
Europe to study art, returning in 1925. After the New York Herald
reproduced one of his charicatures, Hirschfeld gained popularity and began
a longstanding relationship with the New York Times. After the birth
of his daughter Nina, he began to incorporate the lines of her name in each
sketch, a game newspaper readers picked up on, becoming a precursor to the
likes of "Where's Waldo".
FDC Signed ("Hirschfeld"). One
page, 8½ x 4½", Edinburgh, England, February 4, 1986. Being a
first day cover honoring British films. In blue ink. Two soft creases at
upper edge. Else, the cover is in very fine condition overall.
With
his recognizable hand, Hirschfeld signs his name next to his printed
drawing of actress Vivien Leigh.

Lawrence, Jacob
(1917-2000) Painter whose works, primarily in gouache and tempera,
vividly portray scenes from black life and history. His work "Migration"
brought him worldwide acclaim.
Signatures. Lot of six pieces,
featuring five matted and one unmatted signed color reproductions. The
matted prints include "Cabaret," "The Library," "Strike," "The Migration
(panel 40)" and "Another Patrol." The unmatted print is entitled "Tomb

(1923-1997) American painter who was a founder and foremost
practitioner of Pop Art, a movement that took images and techniques from
popular culture. The first American painter to have work hung in London's
Tate Gallery.
Signatures. Five Lichtenstein signatures. Three
clipped signatures are matted with color reproduction prints ("The Melody
Haunts my Reverie," "Flatten-- Sand Fleas!" "M-Maybe") and two signatures
appear on prints ("Interiors" and "Picasso"). Items are matted in sizes
from 13 x 11" to 15 x 12¼." All of the items in this lot are in very
