Lot 1069
"America" by Herman Moll, 1726.
Hand-colored, copper-plate engraving, approximately 9 x 11", n.p., dated
1726. Beautifully preserved early map of "America" depicting an imperfectly
known North America, South America, Central America, Mexico, and Canada. The
map shows California as an island, separated from the North American continent
by the "Gulf of California," surmounted by the speculative "Strait of Annian,"
and a variety of fancifully named regions. Territorial detail is limited to the
Colonies, Louisiana Territory, Canada, and Mexico. The city of Sante Fe is the
westernmost territory named. Within the interior, the Great Lakes are prominent
as is the Mississippi and its tributaries. Canada and South America are well
detailed and obviously well-explored by this time. There is no detail within
the Island of California itself. Fine. Matted to an overall size of 14 x
17".
Estimated Value $500-750.
Lot 1070
American Revolution. Iconography.
Fifty-eight steel-engraved prints depicting famous battles and scenes from the
American Revolutionary War, The French-Indian War, The Civil War, The Mexican
War, and The War of 1812. Fifty-four of the steel-engravings are large,
11½ x 8½", on card stock, printed by Virtue & Yorston, New York,
and feature famous American Generals in victory and defeat, including Generals
Scott, Stark, Zachary Taylor, Commodore Perry, Major Dix, and General George
Washington, in a representation that seems incongruous in the light of history,
raising the British flag at Fort Du Quesne. Historic battles, sieges and
charges, Indian heroes, and the military men and women that fought our wars are
among the vivid images depicted. Fine. Some of the prints have
occasional stains, but the majority are in fine condition.
Estimated Value
$250-UP.

1870-80. Eerie early photograph of a Shanghai penal colony, depicting a line of
six convicts, standing in an outdoor prison yard, with heavy wooden pallets
collared to their necks. The convicts are yoked to one another by an iron chain
which joins each of them at the neck. They are dressed in layers of rags, each
with a motley, improvised head piece to protect their exposed heads. They look
directly at the camera with expressions of blase disinterest, or studied
amusement. A crude fence, broken slabs of mortar, and bleached outbuildings are
visible in the background. Fine. Matted to an overall size of 18½
x 16".
Estimated Value $300-350.
Lot 1073
Native American Indian Prints.
Hand-colored Lithographs of Two Indian Chiefs. Lot of Two
Lithographs, each 6¾ x 10½", disbound from the original publication,
printed and colored by J.T. Bowen, published by Rice & Hart, Philadelphia,
[1830-40]. Two exceptionally fine lithograph prints, made from the original
lithographic stone, then water colored by hand, in bold and vivid tones. Each
print depicts a different Indian Chief, with painstaking detail given to
ornament and dress. The first depicts "KISH-KAL-WA, A Shawanoe Chief" in
blue blouse with elaborate piercings and jewelry. The second portrait
represents "KAI-POL-E-QUA, A Saukie Brave," with sword, ceremonial garb,
and an elaborate headdress.
The idea of reproducing the portraits of
famous Native American Indian Chiefs as colored lithographs was originally
conceived by Thomas Mckenny, then Superintendent of Indian Trade. The original
paintings on which they were based, many of them executed by Charles King and
James Lewis, were first stored in the War Department, and later moved to the
Smithsonian Institution, where they were destroyed in the fire of 1856.
Subsequently, these lithographs constitute and important and valuable record of
Native American tribal history, and are increasingly being sought after by
collectors. Fine. Some peripheral soiling, with binding traces at
extreme right-hand margin where the leaves have been disbound. Also included is
the biographical text that accompanied the prints, also taken from the original
volume. Two exquisite examples of Native American historiography.
Estimated
Value $250-500.
