California Gold Rush Commemorative Tokens. On January 24, 1848, James Wilson Marshall discovered gold in the American River at Sutter's Mill. This event led to the famous "Gold Rush" of 1848.

[Civil War] Collection of Pro-Union Civil War Covers. A collection of Seventeen 12mo Civil War Era Printed Envelopes, with a variety of engraved patriotic cartoons and pro-Union mottos printed beneath. Nineteen items in all, each in Fine condition.

Commemorative Covers Celebrating British Military History. Collection of Seventeen British covers, most large format 6½ x 4½, commemorating British military campaigns and expeditions of WWI, and other events and figures relating to the second World War. Six covers commemorate the historic missions of the Royal Air Forces Escaping Society, and feature lengthy printed texts which narrate the military rescue missions each cover celebrates. Also included are covers commemorating the "35th Anniversary of the Attack on Palermo Harbor by Human Torpedoes"; a ceremonial cover honoring Lord Mountbatten; a French first day cover commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the Invasion of Normandy; three covers with elaborate printed texts that commemorate famous British Naval "Attacks," two signed by the commanding officers of the vessels depicted on the covers; and several others commemorating the military events of World War II. Very Fine.

Early Commerce of San Francisco. Collection of Bill Heads from San Francisco in the 1800's. Picturesque collection of seventeen decorative Bill Heads from the mid- to late-1800's that provide a vivid account of commerce in San Francisco in the 19th Century. Included are large shipping bills for freight, lengthy enumerated receipts for a farrago of dry goods, an early steerage ticket for steamship passage on the America, ornate bills for Hardware, Carriage Implements, Iron Frame Railroad Track, Furniture, Harnesses, Saddlery, and Leaf Tobacco, Utilities, and more. Also included are two unusual bill heads from the United States Government, one for "Extra Services rendered as Blacksmith showing public Animals" for the U.S. Army, and another from the U.S. Mint, being a "Memorandum of Gold Bullion deposited at the Mint," which records the deposit of $395 in gold coin. There are also two early bank checks, and an early holograph receipt, dated "New York, December 2, 1772" for "One thousand Cocoa to grind into Chocolate." Almost all the bill heads are decorated with fine engravings, and are in very good to very fine condition.

Also included in this lot is a printed booklet from the same period, entitled The Vigilance Committee of 1856, Fifty-eight pages, San Francisco, 1890, published by James H. Barry, written "By A Pioneer California Journalist," being the first account of the Vigilance Committee written by someone who was not a member. Covers somewhat ragged, otherwise fine. Fine.
