Liberty Walking Half Dollars
Lot 1659 1916-D. PCGS graded MS-66. If you thought the other Gem toned 1916-D Half Dollar in this sale was pretty, wait until you see this jewel. The colors and the toning patterns are nearly
identical, but this one is slightly smoother and silkier in appearance. The strike is exceptional and the surfaces are essentially flawless. In the MS-66 grade, this date becomes very rare. NGC has graded only 16 coins at this level, with only 7
higher (all MS-67's). Color photo. Estimated Value $2,200-2,500.
Lot 1660 1916-D. NGC graded MS-65. Deep, colorful toning on both sides, reminiscent of the "mint set" toning seen on later, government issued Mint Sets. Such conditions did not exist when
this coin was issued, thus the chances of acquiring such beautiful toning were low, indeed. Gem examples of this date are the exception -- the most common Mint State grades are MS-63 to MS-64. Color photo. Estimated Value $1,000-1,200.
Lot 1661 1916-S. MS-64. First year of issue for A.A. Weinman's Walking Liberty design. In 1916, the Denver mint was the most prolific of the three then operating. However, despite the large
numbers of this date, Uncirculated examples of the 1916-D Half Dollar are still prizes. This example has a soft, even luster enhanced by splashes of golden color. The strike is good and the surfaces are very clean. Estimated Value $1,600-1,700.
Lot 1662 1917-D. Mint mark on reverse. MS-64. Excellent strike, offering nice detailing of Liberty's and thumb. Full, strong luster in a creamy, frosty format. Lightly toned in autumn-leaf brown
and steel-blue at the peripheries. Rare in this lofty grade. Estimated Value $3,700-3,900.
Gem 1917-S on reverse Walker
Lot 1663 1917-S. Mint mark on reverse. PCGS graded MS-65 Premium Quality. A fresh, gem example of this difficult to obtain issue. As usual, the head on Liberty is not fully defined nor is her left
hand, however, the intense mint luster and lovely original light toning adds to its appeal, thus our "PQ" designation is fully justified. Estimated Value $8,500-9,000.
Lot 1664 1927-S. MS-64. Frosty white, with a particularly bright and brilliant reverse. Softly struck at the centers, as usual for a 1927-S Half Dollar, but sharp and crisp everywhere else.
Accompanied by an old, green-label PCGS insert with the grade "MS64" (presumably, this coin was perceived to have a shot at the 65 grade). Estimated Value $1,900-2,100.
Lot 1665 1929-S. MS-64. A choice Brilliant Uncirculated example, bright and frosty. Estimated Value $550-600.
Lot 1666 1934-S. PCGS graded MS-63 PQ. Well struck and flashy, totally white. Estimated Value $450-550.
Lot 1667 1935-D. ANACS graded MS-65. Delicate light golden toning adherers to the borders. Estimated Value $600-700.
Lot 1668 1935-D. MS-64. A totally white, frosty mint specimen. Estimated Value $250-300.
1939 Proof 68 Half
Lot 1669 1939. NGC graded Proof 68 *. A pristine, dazzling white Gem. Well struck, with a nice cameo effect. Proof-68 Walkers are expected to be nice, but this one is especially so, earning it a Star
designation from NGC. NGC has graded only 29 Proof-68 1939 Walkers, however, we suspect that only a few of those carry the Star designation. Finding a better one is well nigh impossible -- NGC has graded only 1 Proof-69! Estimated Value
$7,000-9,000.
Lot 1670 1939-D. PCGS graded MS-63. Premium Quality. Lustrous, with faint toning on the obverse. Housed in a first-generation PCGS holder. Estimated Value $35-45.
Lot 1671 1941. NGC graded Proof 67. Nice golden toning mingled with sky-blue iridescence. The design of these coins is attractive enough to begin with, but when found in Proof condition with nice
color, they are simply gorgeous. It's no wonder they are so popular with collectors. Estimated Value $1,300-1,400.
Lot 1672 1941-D. NGC graded MS-65. Pleasing light golden toning that deepens a bit around the outer borders. Estimated Value $120-140.
Lot 1673 1941-S. NGC graded MS-64. Estimated Value $120-140.
Lot 1674 1942. PCGS graded Proof 67. Another bright proof that has a bit of toning at the edge, hazy and white elsewhere. Estimated Value $1,100-1,300.
Lot 1675 1942. Proof 64. Light russet toning rests along the peripheries. Estimated Value $400-450.
Lot 1676 1943. NGC graded MS-64. Together with: 1956 NGC graded MS-65. Both coins are nicely toned. Lot of 2 coins. Estimated Value $75-100.
Lot 1677 Complete Set of Walkers. 1916-1947-D. Grading from About Good to Extremely Fine with the 3 1921s in AG condition. Estimated Value $500-600.
