1867. No rays. PCGS graded Proof 64 Cameo. Premium Quality. A nice proof that is desirable not only for its strong cameo but also because the coin itself comes very, very close to the PR-65 grade. In 1867, the coiner rebelled after being asked to produce Proof versions of the With Rays Nickel, citing die loss as a distinct possibility. He must have relented, since a scant few were known to have been struck. The removal of the rays from the back of the coin made it easier to strike the coins, so the same objections were not raised when it came time to strike Proof versions of the No Rays design.
Estimated Value $800-850.
