Indian Head Cents

Lot 1098 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1875. PCGS graded Proof 65 Red & Brown. Deep mirrors on the obverse giving a slight cameo contrast. Woodgrain toning on the reverse as is common on early 1870's Indian Cents. The obverse is very close to full red. This is a very difficult date to find with attractive surfaces such as this example. This has the same reverse die as seen on the 1872 and 1874 earlier in the sale with the bulging T.
Estimated Value $750-900.

Lot 1099 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1875. Proof 64 Red & Brown. We note a tiny mark on the cheek and some scattered light fly-specks. Only 700 or so proofs made.
Estimated Value $240-275.

Lot 1100 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1876. NGC graded MS-65 Red & Brown. Great luster. Mahogany red in the centers, fading to gold around the rims. Sharply struck with no mentionable spots or distractions. There is a raised S shaped line on lady Liberty' cheek. This is a lint hub-through. When the die is impressed with the hub, any lint or foreign object will be impressed into the die as well. This depression in the die transfers to all coins from that die as a raised line.
Estimated Value $800-900.

Estimated Value $750-900.

Splendid Business Strike 1877 Indian Cent

Lot 1103 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1877. NGC graded MS-64 Red & Brown. Well struck with very few marks. The surfaces are toned mostly brown on the obverse while the reverse is mostly red. This is widely known to be the key date in the Indian cent series. Curiously, Rick Snow reports that only two obverse dies and one reverse die is known for all the 852,500 business strikes reportedly minted. This is very unusual, as Mr. Snow relates that the average die struck about 200,000 coins during this period. Also, the known dies do not show remarkable die wear that would be associated with such a high mintage on so few dies. What does this mean? Possibly, the true mintage of the 1877 Indian cent is much lower than actually reported. Snow offers an opinion that perhaps only 250,000 were struck in all. If this is so, then the remainder of the mintage could have been coins dated 1876. No hard evidence for this theory is available yet, so this is at best just a thought experiment offered by Mr. Snow.
Estimated Value $4,000-4,500.

1877. NGC graded Proof 64 Brown. Although graded with a brown designation, the coin has a large percentage of red. There are numerous spots, so a personal inspection is recommended. The reverse die is the bulging T die which is the same as found on many proof dates from 1872 to 1877.
Estimated Value $1,300-1,500.

Lot 1108 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1878. NGC graded Proof 66 Red & Brown. Medium mirrors with mostly brown color that flashes with much more red when it is reflected into the light. A small lint strike-through is visible on the cheek. These are an artifact of the striking process and as such are less of an indignity as contact marks or spots, which are absent on the present coin.
Estimated Value $500-750.

Lot 1109 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1879. NGC graded Proof 66 Red Snow PR-1. This is a bright gold beauty. The obverse is essentially flawless. The reverse shows a flaw under the T in CENT that, judging from NGC's opinion must be Mint caused. There is wide repunching on the 8 and 9 to the east. This die is later reground so the repunching and used on business strike pieces. These are listed as Snow-1. Color photo.
Estimated Value $2,000-2,500.
