Lot 1545
Anderson, George "Tighe".
Carte de visite. Bust portrait as general, no backmark. Matted and framed
to 6 x 8". Toning to card and image, with some fading. Overall, very good
condition. Removed from frame for inspection.
Estimated Value $500-700.
Lot 1546
Appomattox Parole with Lee
and Grant cdvs. Appomattox pass with Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant
cartes de visite, matted and framed to 12¾ x 11½". The pass,
issued to Sgt. Brian Williams of Company H, 18th Regiment of (Virginia?)
Infantry, and signed by "Col William Thomas (Late C.S.A.)". Unevenly
trimmed at left edge, one tear down center does not make a significant impact,
there is toning across the center of the page. The Lee cdv is an oval chest
portrait, Lee is in a colonel's uniform. Minor toning to card, one area of
foxing at top edge, good to very good condition. The Grant cdv is a very nice
version of a Brady portrait, clear with only bends at the corners.
Appomattox paroles are very scarce and this is a very nice example
mounted with super cartes de visite images -- fill out your collection.
Estimated Value $2,500-3,000.
Lot 1547
Archer, James Jay.
Carte de visite and cdv copy matted and framed with signed document to 16 x
12". The original cdv features a chest portrait of the general in uniform;
there is minor toning and faint foxing, but otherwise this is in very good
condition. The cdv copy features a pre-War portrait of the General. The signed
document ("J.J. Archer) is an apparent fine copy of a receipt, dated May
27, 1859, which bears his rank "Capt" and what appears to be the unit
designation. One horizontal crease, one faint area of toning above text, else
fine. A scarce signature.
Estimated Value $1,000-1,500.
Lot 1548
Baker, Laurence S.
Uniformed chest portrait carte de visite. Anthony backmark, mounted and
framed to 6 x 8". Bottom ¼" of card trimmed unevenly; pencil ID verso;
minor foxing with some toning in image. Overall, very good condition. Removed
from frame for inspection.
Although the uniform has been somewhat
re-touched, there is a suggestion in the center chest area that Baker's arm is
in his lap, indicating this is probably a version of the larger image below.
Estimated Value $350-400.
Lot 1549
Baker, Laurence S.
Unmounted cabinet image, seated in uniform, ¾ length. Minor plate
imperfections, a few scattered wrinkles; very light pencil ID verso. Generally,
very good to near fine condition.
Baker was wounded several times and
is pictured here with his arm in a sling. A very crisp image in a scarce large
format.
Estimated Value $300-400.
Lot 1550
Beall, William. Lot of
two items, the first is a seated uniform portrait cdv of Beall by Anthony.
Toning to card; minor soil verso; remnants of tax stamp verso; strong image.
Very good condition.
Autograph Letter Signed ("Wm N.R. Beall").
One page, 7 x 10", Johnson's Island Military Prison, Ohio, July 17, 1864. On
lined paper, embossed "B". To Miss Semantha Atkeson of Buffalo, Virginia.
Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope. Some foxing, mailing creases,
Still, overall condition is very good to fine.
General Beall's letter,
written just over a year after he surrendered Port Hudson, is full of gracious
thanks for his correspondent and information about prison life: "...At the
fall of Port Hudson, more than one year since, I had the good fortune to save
my trunk and clothes and now have a good supply of clothing...There are now
over two thousand officers confined here and after a long, long and tedious
confinement there seems no prospect of an early exchange and who can tell how
much longer we will have to remain here. We are permitted to write and receive
one page..."
Beall was one of 9,000 prisoners who passed through the
Johnson's island gates between April 1862 and September 1865. Shortly after
this letter was sent, Beall was released on parole and served the rest of the
War as a supply agent for Confederate prisoners of war, maintaining an office
in New York and passing through federal barricades.
Estimated Value
$2,000-2,500.
Lot 1551
Beauregard, Pierre Gustave
T. Signature and date ("G T Beauregard / 1892") mounted with Anthony
chest portrait cdv, matted and framed to 9 x 11". The signature, on an ivory
card, was penned only a year before Beauregard's death, and is in a strong,
although aging, hand. The card is in fine condition. The cdv shows minor, very
faint foxing and there is minor soil verso, overall fine condition. Removed
from frame for inspection.
Estimated Value $400-500.
Lot 1552
Beauregard, Pierre Gustave
T. Carte de visite. Uniformed ¾ length portrait, backmark indicates
it was published by Anthony from Brady negative. Matted and framed to 6½
x 8". Card is toned; image shows toning from developer at edges, but figure is
strong and clear; crease very faint up center of card where is was bent at some
point. Overall, very good condition and a striking portrait. Removed from frame
for inspection.
Estimated Value $300-400.
Lot 1553
Boyd, Belle. Chest
portrait carte de visite matted and framed with a clipped signature to an
overall size of 9½ x 12". The cdv shows some minor toning and the faint
remains of a penciled identification in a light field at the bottom of the
portrait, but the overall condition is very good. The clipped signature
("Yours truly / Belle Boyd of Va. / The Rebel Spy / C.S.A.") appears to
be on the verso of a card, and Boyd apparently made a correction to the
"C". Overall, very good condition.
Estimated Value $1,000-1,500.
Lot 1554
Branch, Lawrence O'Brien.
Free Frank ("Free / Lr. OB. Branch / N.C."). As Congressman from
North Carolina. Octavo envelope, Washington DC, January 1861. Addressed in
Branch's hand to the Hon. Thomas Ruffin of Alamance County, North Carolina.
Minor toning to edges; a faint stain vertically through the center of the
envelope; overall, near fine. Framed and matted with a cdv copy of Branch, to
9¼ x 11". A very rare signature.
Oh, how we yearn for the contents
of this envelope! Thomas Ruffin, Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme
Court, was one of North Carolina's five representatives to the February Peace
Conference in Washington DC -- a last ditch effort to put off the coming war --
and the postmark on our envelope would indicate that Branch's communication
likely had some bearing on the coming meeting. Ruffin was against secession and
believed that a compromise was possible, indeed, President Buchanan said later
than if Ruffin had argued longer, war would have been averted. A strong,
scarce, highly desirable signature on an envelope with intriguing connections.
Estimated Value $1,250-2,000.
Lot 1555
Buchanan, Franklin.
Document Signed ("Frankn Buchanan / Commander") matted and framed
with two cartes de visite to 17 x 17". As Commander of the U.S.S. Vincennes.
One page, folio, aboard ship, February 1843. Being a log sheet from the U.S.S.
Vincennes, endorsed by Buchanan. Rough right edge where it was removed from its
book, faint foxing and toning. Bold signature, fine condition.
The top
cdv is a portrait of Buchanan in his Confederate uniform, on a cream card with
double line border, taken during the War. The lower photograph is the Matthew
Brady image of Buchanan in his USN uniform, reportedly this image was taken in
May 1861, immediately after he resigned his U.S. commission. Removed from frame
for inspection.
This is really an outstanding piece honoring a man who
was a hero to many.
Estimated Value $2,000-2,500.
Lot 1556
Buckner, Simon Bolivar.
Autograph Note Signed ("S.B. Buckner"). One page, small quarto,
Munfordville, Kentucky, August 7, 1907. A brief letter to an unknown addressee
stating that "The address of Gen. G.W.C. Lee is to the care of his nephew,
R. E. Lee, Jr, Washington DC. ". Transmittal fold, minor toning, else
fine.
Obviously written in an elderly hand, this letter dates to
Buckner's 84th year and speaks of his involvement with his fellow officers well
into his later years. Indeed, the comradeship shared by soldiers on both sides
of the Civil War was notable for its longevity -- forged in the fires of battle
as young men, their friendships remained active and sustained them until death.
Estimated Value $300-400.
Lot 1557
Buckner, Simon Bolivar.
Signature ("S.B. Buckner"). Dark ink signature on 4 x 2¼"
card. Fine. Ideal for framing.
Estimated Value $150-200.
Lot 1558
Butler, Matthew Calbraith.
Signature and rank with date mounted and framed with a tinted, uniformed
(in the rank of colonel) unpublished bust portrait carte de visite to 9
x 12". The signature ("M.C. Butler / Maj Gen'l U.S. Vols / Washington D.C. /
Feb'y 3rd 99") is on a 4 x 2½" ivory card. There is very faint
toning at the very edges, otherwise the card is in fine condition. The cdv
shows toning and scattered foxing, but the clarity of the image is wonderful.
Overall, this piece is in very good condition.
A wonderful set,
emblematic of Butler's long military and political career.
Estimated Value
$1,000-1,500.
Lot 1559
Chilton, Robert Hall.
Carte de visite matted and framed with wardate clipped signature to 9 x
13½". Bust portrait carte de visite (civilian clothes) mounted on ivory
card with double line border. Very small pencil ID at bottom of image; slightly
ragged edge at right side of image; very faint scattered foxing; one faint,
small smudge at bottom edge of card. Overall, the carte de visite is in very
good condition.
The clipped signature ("RH Chilton") was apparently
removed from a larger document, as it reads "Reply forwarded & recommended
By (illegible) Genl Lee Hdqrs anva RH Chilton Octr 25/62
(illegible)" There is minor toning at and near the edges, otherwise the
signature clip is in very good condition. Chilton was serving as Lee's
Assistant Adjutant General during 1862 and the illegible scrawl after his name
is likely "AAG". Chilton and Lee had been friends for many years, but
their names are most closely linked to modern audiences because Chilton wrote
Special Order 191, what has become known as Lee's Lost Order.
Estimated
Value $600-700.
Lot 1560
Clingman, Thomas Lanier.
Stereoview three-quarter portrait of Clingman in uniform, matted and framed
with a clipped signature to 12 x 11½". Clingman sits with his right hand
inside his jacket. There is some toning to the edges and minor, faint foxing
throughout. Clingman's name and rank are inked in a neat hand at the top right
edge of the image. The portrait is mounted on a yellow card with "American &
Foreign" printed at the left edge and "Portrait Gallery" at the right. A strong
signature mounted beneath the image lies next to the top edge of a free frank
postmark from Washington, indicating this clipped signature is likely from his
days as a U.S. Senator. Overall, very good condition.
Stereoview images
of Confederate generals are scarce and we are delighted to offer two in this
sale! (See the Imboden image below).
Estimated Value $1,000-2,000.
Lot 1561
Cobb, Howell. Carte de
visite. Pre-war image from Brady's National Portrait Gallery, sold by
McAllister & Brother, Chestnut Street, Philadelphia. Pencil ID verso, minor
toning to card. Overall, fine condition.
Estimated Value $200-300.
Lot 1562
Cobb, Thomas R. R.
Signature ("Tho R R Cobb"). Clipped signature, 4½ x
½"slip. Strong, dark signature. Page possibly treated. Fine. A scarce
autograph.
Cobb, younger brother to Howell Cobb, was a lawyer before the
Civil War, noted for his book An Inquiry into the Law of Negro Slavery.
Noted for his bravery, he led "Cobb's Legion" in the Seven Days' battles, at
Second Manassas, and Antietam. Appointed Brig. Gen. on November 1, 1862, Cobb
commanded his brigade under General Lafayette McLaws at Fredericksburg in
December, 1862. While directing his troops at Sunken Road, Cobb was hit by a
sniper's bullet, which severed an artery in his thigh, and died within minutes.
Estimated Value $950-1,500.
Lot 1563
Colquitt, Alfred.
Signature ("Alfred H. Colquitt / Georgia") mounted with uniformed
chest portrait carte de visite, matted and framed to 10 x 12". A gorgeous
portrait and beautiful signature, there is one very small area of discoloration
faint at Colquitt's shoulder. Both fine.
The "Georgia" may
indicate this was penned during his term as a U.S. Senator.
Estimated Value
$600-700.
Lot 1564
Cooper, Samuel.
Clipped signature and rank ("S. Cooper / Adjutant General") mounted
and framed with chest-portrait cdv, matted and framed to 8¾ x 8½".
The signature obviously closes a letter: "Your Obt Servt," precedes the
signature and rank and a small amount of text is visible through the paper.
There is a horizontal crease between the closing and signature, and two small
spots of foxing that do not affect the text; the overall condition is fine. The
cdv shows some minor toning and very faint foxing, but is in otherwise fine
condition.
Estimated Value $500-600.
Lot 1565
Drayton, Thomas Fenwick.
Carte de visite. Uniformed portrait bust view mounted in printed oval frame
on standard-size cdv card. Abrasion to card above image, minor soil, else fine.
Matted and framed to 6½ x 8". A handsome piece with a wonderfully clear
image. Removed from frame for inspection.
Estimated Value $500-600.
Lot 1566
Early, Jubal Anderson.
Signature and chest portrait carte de visite mounted and framed to
8¾x 8¾". The signature ("J.A. Early / Lynchburg / Virginia")
is clear and flowing, the only flaw is a small stain in the blank field to the
right of the signature. The cdv is quite toned, but clear, and there are two
small areas of foxing in the fields to the right and top of the image. The cdv
appears to be a version of a frequently seen image of Early in his uniform,
although in this picture the cropping and shading make it impossible to see the
stars on his collar. Overall, very good to fine condition. In spite of Early's
long life, his is a scarce signature.
Estimated Value $1,250-1,500.
Lot 1567
Elmore, E. C. Document
Signed ("E.C. Elmore"). As Treasurer of the Confederate States.
Partially printed, accomplished in manuscript. One page, octavo, Richmond,

from frame for inspection.
A clear, beautiful portrait of the general
whose reputation is still up in the air.
Estimated Value $600-700.
Lot 1569
Finegan, Joseph. Carte
de visite, uniformed, seated chest portrait. Matted and framed to 7 x 8".
Toning to image and card with expected minor surface soil; corners have been
clipped; no backmark; pencil ID verso. Overall, very good condition. Removed
from frame for inspection.
Estimated Value $1,000-1,500.
Lot 1570
Forney, John H. Seated
in uniform, ¾ length portrait carte de visite. Matted and framed to
6½ x 8". Somewhat clumsily mounted to ivory card, the edges are crooked
and an a abrasion to the left edge has resulted in two minor tears lifting of
the image. There appears to be a repaired tear in the dark field at the top
right -- either this is an early repair or this image may have been removed
from another card and re-applied to this one. A strong image that would benefit
from professional repair but the overall condition is very good. Removed from
frame for inspection.
Estimated Value $300-400.
