Head, Edith
(1897-1981). Celebrated costume designer of over 400 feature films.
Nominated for 34 Oscars, Head has been honored with eight of the
statuettes. She was hired by Paramount Pictures after answering a newspaper
ad for sketch artists and became a celebrated designer in such demand that
she rarely did her own sketches. Her work can be seen in the films All
About Eve, Sunset Blvd., A Place in the Sun, To Catch a Thief
(admittedly, her favorite assignment), Airport, Butch Cassidy and the
Sundance Kid, Roman Holiday, Samson and Delilah, Sabrina, and The
Sting, among numerous others.
Costume sketch designed by
Edith Head. From the "Airport Collection", this drawing pictures a
young woman wearing a funky pantsuit in a polka dot design with cropped
jacket, barét and large handbag. Head has signed the lower right
corner, and identified the outfit for the collection. Measuring 10 x
13½", laid down for an overall size of 12 x 16". Surface crazing, a
few abrasions, and light soil. Mat board is a bit worn. Still, in good to
very good condition overall.

Plunkett, Walter
(1902-1982). Costume designer and authority on period fashions. A
former vaudeville actor and evening gown designer, Plunkett later created
the wardrobes for Hollywood films, Broadway shows, and Metropolitan Opera
productions. He is best known for his work on Gone With the Wind,
and won an Academy Award for An American in Paris.
Costume

Signed at the lower right, "Plunkett". Ink, watercolor and graphite
on paper. Measuring 12 x 17", by sight. Handsomely matted and framed to an
overall size of 19 x 25". One small stain at lower right which does not
affect the signature. In very good to fine condition overall.

Sketches. Collection of seven sketches of women's fashions from the
seventies. Including sketches of Lilli Diamond wearing a silver chiffon
evening gown; a design for a black ruffled wrap dress with bright pink
scarf; a sketch of the four "Carol Burnett Show" cast members each wearing
glitzy formal wear; a drawing of Edie Adams wearing a butterfly inspired
gown by Warden Neil; two sketches of appropriate disco attire; and finally,
a sketch of a 70s floral skirt with bright orange wrap shirt. Each ink,
graphite, and watercolor on paper or paperboard. Original fabric swatches
accompany first two sketches. Sizes range from 8½ x 14" to 16 x 20".
Conditions range. Overall in good condition.

Adventures of Robin
Hood. Costume sketch of Eugene Pallette as "Friar Tuck" from the
1938 film, The Adventures of Robin Hood. Designed by Milo
Anderson, Tuck appears disguised as a Palmer wearing a wide brimmed hat
and a grey smock with a pouch and staff. Signed at the lower right,
profusely notated by Anderson. Typed costumer's notes appear affixed to the
verso. Pencil, and ink on paperboard. Measuring 15 x 20". Soiled, corners
are folded, with a few abrasions. Also included is a sketch of Michael
Craig as "Sir Anthony Spencer" from the film Star! (1968).
Designed by Donald Brooks, Craig wears a brown jacket, tan slacks,
and simple brown striped tie. Signed at the lower center. Watercolor and
ink on paperboard. Measuring 15 x 20". Light surface dirt, with an abrasion
at upper right. Overall, the group is in good condition.

Designs of Santiago
and Bill Thomas. Group of four costume sketches including a pair from
designer Santiago with a pair from Bill Thomas. The first Santiago
sketch pictures a brunette wearing a pink ball gown with exaggerated,
sweeping full skirt; the second, a courtly Renaissance man wearing a red
striped, quilted jacket with matching fitted red pants, a periwinkle cape
and red hat, labeled "Alan Jones Faust". Both are signed in pencil at the
lower right. Both ink, watercolor, and graphite on paperboard. Measuring 14
x 20" and 13 x 20", respectively. Also included are two costume sketches
designed by noted costumer Bill Thomas. The first, an early 20th
century green dress with lace detailing, the second, a classy black evening
dress, also with delicate lace accents. Original fabric swatches of the
green dress are included. Both are signed at the lower right. Both ink and
pencil on paperboard. Measuring 15 x 20". Corners are worn, light toning.
Overall, the group is in good condition.

Dressed in grey matador pants this sketch features a muscular man with a
red, white, and blue sash tied at his waist. Designer's notes appear in

Unidentified costume sketch of a cowboy wearing dark pants, a green shirt,
slate grey vest, and heavy boots with his hat in hand. Measuring 14½

lower left. 3. Sketch of a cowboy wearing a fringed jacket and pants,
cowboy hat and boots and carrying a rifle. Measuring 14 x 20". Ink and

jacket with riding pants, tall lace-up boots, and a leather, fir trimmed

Fleur Thiemeyer [Ozzy
Osborne]. Costume designer Thiemeyer is best known for the flamboyant
designs created for rocker Ozzy Osborne, and was featured in a 1988
"Theater Crafts" article on her Osborne creations. Married to a rock star
(Mike of White Lion), she has also designed pieces for Olivia Newton John
and the 1988 film Hear No Evil.
Six sketches of costumes
created for Ozzy Osborne by Fleur Thiemeyer. Designed for his
1985-86 tour, each piece depicts a different flamboyant look for the
ex-Black Sabbath lead singer. Each costume features Ozzy's signature
draping coat richly accented with feathers, fringe, and metallic fabrics.
All sketches are in colored with ink and graphite on paperboard, but for
one simple pencil drawing. Each measures 18 x 12". A few are lightly soiled
at edges, one with a pinhole at upper center. Overall, in very good
condition.

Sketches. 1. John Baur sketch of a Vegas style show-girl. Dripping with
sparkling gems, the curvaceous blonde wears a dazzling sequined outfit with
feathered tail and headdress. Signed at the lower right, and dated 1969.

left center, soiled edges, with outlines of an additional sketch verso. 2.
D. Doucette costume sketch for "Carol Burnette on Ice". The red-headed
comedienne wears a sequined red costume with a feathered headdress and
elaborate sleeves. Signed at the lower right. Ink and graphite on
paperboard. Measuring 14 x 18". Light soiling. 3. Unidentified costume
sketch of a pair of dancers, dressed as lobsters complete with sectional
abdomens and claws. Indistinctly signed at the lower left with costumer's
additional pencil notations in margins. Ink and pencil on paperboard.
Measuring 12 x 16". A few pinholes, with toning at edges. 4. Elaborate
costume sketch identified as the "Dandelion Girl". Appearing as a dandelion
blossom among leaves, the costume features a headdress of a white blossom
and a bright green and yellow colored skirt adorned by leaf shaped accents.
Fabric swatches included. Indistinctly signed at the lower right. Ink, and
pencil on paperboard. Framed under glass to an overall size of 14 x
21¼". Lightly soiled. Overall, the group is in good condition.

Marjorie Best Costume
Sketches (1903-1997). Best, an academy award winning costume designer,
was nominated for the award four times and won her Oscar for 1949's The
Adventures of Don Juan. Her work has appeared in The Greatest Story
Ever Told, Rio Bravo, and Giant.
Three costume
sketches designed by Majorie Best. The first is labeled "Feathers" and
features a raven haired actress in an elaborate pink and black beaded
dancers costume. The next, also labeled "Feathers" is a sketch of a red,
19th century period dress with striped underskirt. The final drawing,
identified as the costume for David Street's dance number in "The Tenor",
pictures the actor wearing a crimson turtleneck and slacks with a pink
vest. Best has added notations in pencil that his buttons should be
"shocking pink rhinestones". Each sketch is signed at the lower right. The
"Feathers" sketches measure 8½ x 11", while "The Tenor" sketch
measures 10 x 15". Sketches are colored pencil, graphite, and watercolor.
One is slightly soiled, one buckled at the lower edge. Overall in very good
condition.

Michael Shields' Diva
Costume Sketches. Four costume sketches by Michael Shields, featuring
Diana Ross in a sparkling floor length pumpkin colored dress with
golden accents; Catherine Deneuvre stylishly presented in a modern
brown suit with pastel blue blouse adorned by a golden belt; a sleek
Liza Minelli in navy pinstriped pantsuit; and finally, Helen
Reddy in bright green wide-legged pants with a vintage printed top --
complete with open toed platform sandals. Each signed at the lower right,
Shields also dated and inscribed the Deneuvre drawing. Sketches measure 14
x 20", and 14 x 18". All are ink and watercolor on paperboard. The Reddy
sketch is slightly water damaged at lower edge, Deneuvre has a pinhole and
light soiling, and Minelli has a pinhole. In good to very good condition
overall.

Throne. Featuring images of a dapper man wearing a red and blue plaid
dinner jacket; a 19th century gentleman wearing a heavy taupe coat, scarf,
hat, and boots; a plump 17th century cavalier wearing a brown lace-up
shirt, green pants, heavy brown boots, with his sword at his side, and cap
in hand; and finally a stylish late 18th century lady wearing a blue,
bustled dress. A fabric swatch of the cavalier's jacket is included. All
ink and graphite on paperboard. Each signed at the lower right. Sizes range
from 13¼ x 20" to 14 x 20". Toning to edges, a few stains and
abrasions. In good condition overall.
