United States Gold Coins

U.S. $20 Gold

$20 St. Gaudens

Lot 4188 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1911. PCGS graded MS-63. A scarce date to locate, nearly impossible to find in full gem condition or better (PCGS has only graded 21 in MS-65 or higher), making this choice coin all the more desirable. Scattered bagmarks on both sides and with abundant luster.
Estimated Value $800-1,000.

1911-D. NGC graded MS-65. Mint luster and well struck, there are some scuffs on Liberty. Scarcer than many dates, especially in gem condition.
Estimated Value $1,000-1,100.

1911-D. PCGS graded MS-64 Premium Quality. Satiny surfaces that boast mint-fresh luster and clean devices. We suspect this coin may be resubmitted for a higher grade, as the surfaces are very nice and Liberty's face does not show the usual heavy stacking marks usually seen on these.
Estimated Value $400-500.

1913-S. PCGS graded MS-63. A nice example of this scarce date, nice choice surfaces with frosty luster and only moderate handling marks.
Estimated Value $2,200-2,500.

1914-D. NGC graded MS-65. This gem has golden toning around the periphery and blazing luster throughout. Excellent fields and devices which show precious few handling marks, keeping it in the gem class. Only 3 coins graded higher by NGC, so don't waste time looking for a better one.
Estimated Value $1,700-2,000.

1914-D. NGC graded MS-65. Another lovely gem of this date, light golden toning around the periphery and well preserved.
Estimated Value $1,700-2,000.

Lot 4194
1922. PCGS graded MS-61. Standard bag quality.
Estimated Value $300-330.

Lot 4195 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1922-S. NGC graded MS-63. Although the original mintage was large, over 2,600,000, most were melted or circulated. Few remain in mint state for date collectors. We doubt if 1,000 exist today in various grades of mint state. Rather heavy polishing lines in the reverse die at the periphery.
Estimated Value $1,200-1,400.

Lot 4196
1924. NGC graded MS-65. Flashy and bright with yellow gold luster and excellent surfaces. Well struck too.
Estimated Value $550-600.

Lot 4197
1924. PCGS graded MS-64. Orange gold in color and well struck.
Estimated Value $400-450.

Lot 4198
1924. MS-63.
Estimated Value $300-350.

Estimated Value $2,500-3,000.

Lot 4200
1925. MS-63. Flashy luster and choice.
Estimated Value $300-350.

Lot 4201
1925. PCGS graded AU-55. A hint of rub.
Estimated Value $275-300.

Lot 4202
1926. MS-63. Satiny luster.
Estimated Value $300-350.

Rare Gem 1926-D Double Eagle

Lot 4203 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1926-D. PCGS graded MS-65. This is one of the key dates to find in Mint State of the St. Gaudens series of double eagles. Mintage dropped to 481,000 for the year, virtually all of which circulated. A few turned up in Swiss banks, but not enough to go around. Turning to the rarity in gem, this coin is virtually unknown in this condition. Only 1 has been graded by PCGS, with 2 coins graded higher! Furthermore NGC hasn't graded any higher than MS-64.
The color of this coin is spectacular, with greenish gold luster at the extreme edge, and coppery luster at the centers. The strike is sharp, and we note no weakness on either side. There is one hidden scrape down the 9 of the date into the devices below, but a glass is needed to see it. One of the most desirable double eagles in full gem condition, and worthy of the finest set.
Estimated Value $50,000-75,000.

Lot 4204
1927. MS-63. A beautiful example of this hoard date.
Estimated Value $300-350.

Lot 4205
1927. MS-63. Bright and frosty.
Estimated Value $300-350.

Lot 4206
1908. No motto, AU-50 and 1928 MS-60. 2 coins.
Estimated Value $500-600.
