A personal and unique visiting card from this masterful American novelist, bearing small imprinted type with a gothic cast. Hawthorne has identified the card as being "for Mr. Lentre," in pencil below his printed name, and inscribed the card on the verso as follows: "Dear Mr. Lentre, I am going to [ ? ], and shall not be back to keep my engagement on Monday. Please excuse me. Yours most sincerely, Nath' Hawthorne."
