Paul I (1796-1801)

Kept in the background by his mother until he inherited the throne at the age of forty-two, Paul hated Catherine and all her allies and advisers. A petty tyrant, he sought to undo his mother's accomplishments and was suspicious and irritable. He freed political prisoners, including Polish rebels, of the previous reign but filled the prisons with his own enemies. He annoyed and terrorized his army by personally performing rigorous inspections and drill reviews. He was fond of saying that no one in Russia was important except the emperor. He alienated the gentry class, punished the serfs even more harshly than his mother had, restored corporal punishment, replaced Peter the Great's method of free selection of the succeeding czar with primogeniture, and gradually led Russia into war with Napoleon's France, both at sea and in northern Italy. Despite victories led by the great General Suvorov, Czar Paul switched allegiances in 1800, thinking Napoleon would gain ultimate victory. Increasingly mad in his military thinking, he was rude and violent, with an unpredictable temperament which earned him wide disdain at court. Ultimately a conspiracy of advisers, family members and the guard, fearful for their own safety, assassinated him in a palace revolution in March 1801.
