Ivan (1740-1741)

The childless Anna named an infant great-grandson of Ivan V to succeed her. Although named Ivan VI, he was only the third of his name to be Czar, and so is sometimes called Ivan III. He never ruled Russia. His German relatives did-at first, his aunt Anna's lover from Courland, Ernst-Johann Biren, who had been the force behind the political terror of her reign, then other German family members, until all were overthrown in a coup led by Peter the Great's daughter, Elizabeth, and the palace guards. Ivan was kept secretly in prison until he was murdered in 1764.

Elizabeth (1741-1762)

Did the glorious, pure-Russian days of Peter the Great return upon the succession of his daughter? Many thought so. Elizabeth restored the parliamentary sharing of power and governmental responsibility, foreign influence was done away with, and the Empress was handsome, young and charming. But she was also easy-going, disorganized and indolent. No one, of course, could ever replace Peter the Great. Elizabeth abolished capital punishment but allowed the poverty of Russia's masses to deepen. She took a Ukrainian cossack as her lover, and his influence brought the Ukraine into the homeland. The University of Moscow was founded during this reign. But while the money was again debased and taxes burdened the serfs, the Empress built the grand Winter Palace and owned a reported fifteen thousand dresses, a fancy that grew out of her infatuation with things French.
