Anna (1730-1740)

Russia found itself suddenly without a single male Romanov, and the Supreme Secret Council debated over the issue of succession until offering the throne to the daughter of Ivan, half-brother of Peter the Great. The childless widow of Duke Friedrich of Courland seemed the perfect choice to the council, weak and therefore unable to oppose its desire to rule the land. Anna had to promise not to marry, not to appoint a successor, not to declare war without the council's approval, and in effect not to govern. All affairs of state had to be approved by the council. By accepting these terms, Anna ushered in the age of constitutional rule. But Anna was not so easily controlled. With the backing of gentry other than those on the council, she soon tore up the agreement she had made and abolished the Secret Council. She brought German influence to the land from her previous court life and distrusted the Russian inner circle, thereby alienating herself. Internal strife led to persecution by the Empress's political police and the execution of thousands of suspected traitors, while some thirty thousand were banished to Siberia. It was a dark period of cruelty, in which the sovereign regained power and the Russian military defeated Turkey, thereby at last acquiring access to the Black Sea for Mother Russia.
