Catherine I (1725-1727)

Lasting just two years and three months, this reign saw the creation of the Supreme Secret Council, in which six advisors came to share power with the monarch. Catherine was Peter's second wife, and because she had been crowned Empress by the czar himself in 1724, she was named his successor by Peter's own council of advisors, who controlled the guard regiment. Thus did Russia follow Rome's example. Her largely peaceful reign ended abruptly with her death at age 44.
