Lot 4571
GOLD COAST. ½ Ackey, 1818. KM-8. George III. Reeded edge. Struck at the Soho Mint. Bright silvery surfaces, full reflective mirrors (unusual in this colonial issue, as most are now hairlined from two centuries of poor handling). Fully struck, with the reverse emblematic of African trade: the elephant bears a Union Jack on a castle, a fully rigged sailing ship is to be found in the central cartouche, and native warriors offering peace to the colonizer stand to either side of the shield. The King's portrait is similar to that found on the contemporary shilling. Probably the nicest of these we have handled. Choice. Proof.
Estimated Value $600-UP.
