Lot 5153
RUSSIA. Pattern Grivennik, 1726. B-33, GM-335, Uzd-2394. Novodel. 41 mm. 56.7 grams. Edge-4 (Lettered: "Russian Grivennik Moscow Mint"). Crowned Catherine I monogram. Reverse: Imperial eagle over 10 value dots. Value and date around. This type is referred to as the "Menshikov Grivennik" because of Prince Menshikov's position as the "power behind the throne" in the reign of Catherine I, and more specifically because the monogram reflects his power, by some interpretations, in that his own monogram is hidden in the curls of the Empress. Extremely Rare. Too large for holder, with tag. Wonderful, glossy chocolate-brown surfaces retaining a hint of mint red. Centered and boldly struck. NGC graded MS-64.
Estimated Value $3,000-UP.
